From 1 to 10 July 2022, the first Breton Games will be held in Nantes. Opportunity to highlight the 5 historical departments of the region and Breton disciplines such as Gaelic football or puck.

It’s the event of the summer in Nantes: the first Breton Games! From July 1 to July 10, 2022, about fifteen disciplines will be presented in the center of Nantes, from Breton puck to Gaelic football. A play village will be created on Cours Saint-André. To see, among other things, tug of war, throwing a sheaf of straw … A whole program! The public will also be able to attend a demonstration of gouraine or Breton wrestling in the courtyard of the castle of the Dukes, and 2,000 runners are expected to complete the Breton steps (13.5 km in Nantes to the sounds of Bagadou).

Gaelic football

The Michel-Lecointre stadium will also host Gaelic football matches, a thriving sport. This is a mixture of football and rugby (up to XV) straight from Ireland. Esteban Sanchez visited the club of Don Bosco, champion of Brittany in this discipline, to learn more about the tournament and its organization.

Basil Talbot’s explanation: The teams are made up of 5 departments of historical Brittany. (Atlantic Loire, Morbihan, Finistère, Côtes-d’Armor, Ile-et-Villain). We have also added an Aboriginal team, with the exception of historical Brittany, to have 6 teams to make it easier to organize matches… In France we don’t have the infrastructure that we can find in Ireland, we play on football or rugby fields. Matches are played 9 against 9 in order to have the same proportion of players on the field. This 9-game game is very recent, before we played 11 against 11, we changed it three or four years ago to have the same proportions as the Irish.

Don Bosco created a coaching team

The Don Bosco Club has achieved good results in recent years both in terms of sports and logistical aspects. Cesar Priou, coach: “for the first time the club became champions of Brittany this year, this reflects the progress that the club has been able to make in the 4-5 years since we moved to the Don Bosco site. When I started in 2015, we trained in Parc Rosa, near Beaujoire, on stabilized ground, which was not always ideal… The coaching team has also existed for 3-4 years, they are also players, but they managed to structure themselves, this allows them to train or manage the training from time to time, they have a rotation that works pretty well, that’s what shows our progress over the last few seasons.”

Club rivalry

These games are a competition similar to the Olympic Games. Brittany champion Don Bosco, Gaelic football coach, talks about the rivalry between different clubs in the west. According to César Priou, “for several years we have always been the 3rd team in the championship, it was Rennes and Liffre who fought for victory … they are our main competitors. At Rennes, there may be a little rivalry that you find in football, but it’s still a rivalry on the pitch., outside there is no problem, we get along very well. These are the players that you can get to know through Brittany’s selection, which contributes to a good atmosphere.”

Brittany Games

Also in the spotlight during these games: Breton wrestling and petanque, tug of war and, of course, the puck. The Rezéen Club has been designated as the venue for the Breton shuffleboard competition and its President Rene Loret believes in his team’s chances : “They will still have to qualify either June 19 (Sunday) or July 2 in the galley. I hope that we will have qualified teams in the club. We have very good teams, and if they are in good shape, then on the day of the qualifying stages, which is one thing, and then on the day of the final it will be possible to play. Our players regularly take part in competitions, especially in the summer in Ilya and Vilna. We have teams competing almost every weekend.”
