VLM ™ what means Viscous Lithography Production this is a relatively new term for the industry. The process of 3D printing was recently launched by a Spanish manufacturer BCN3D Is a patented lithographic 3D printing process that laminates thin layers of high-viscosity resins onto a transparent transfer film, producing high-performance parts quickly and at an affordable price.
What distinguishes VLM from other resin production technologies on the market is its ability to process resins 50 times more viscous than the industry standard. By eliminating the strict limit of low viscosity, a whole new set of ingredients and modifiers can be added to the resin to achieve the desired effect on thermal and mechanical properties, reminds BCN3D.
The problem is that high-viscosity resins can only be manufactured by a few material manufacturers. At launch, the 3D printer maker announced that Arkema was a key partner in developing the first recipes that the technology could process. However, as you may know, in this area, the more diverse the range of materials you produce from material manufacturers, the better it is for the user experience.
Thus, Henkel is the second material manufacturer to work with BCN3D for this technology. Although her collaboration with Nexa3D 3D printer maker is often the most popular, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, an expert in functional adhesives, sealants and coatings, uses her centuries of experience in a variety of AM branded services. Loctite.
” The BCN3D team has developed a new technology that eliminates viscosity limits and allows the printing of a wide range of new materials, which we have witnessed with our own eyes over the past few years of cooperation. Thermal and mechanical properties are improved by additives, which usually increase the viscosity of resins, which in other cases complicates their printing.“, Note Sam Bale, Director of 3D Printing and Partnerships at Henkel.
The materials currently being developed by Henkel and BCN3D cannot yet be fully disclosed; however, one of the main areas of research is the use of elastomers – an area that undoubtedly benefits from high-viscosity resins. These materials may include a high proportion of oligomers to achieve a weakly crosslinked polymer network: a structure that can flexibly withstand mechanical stress, act as industrial-grade elastomers, and provide improved mechanical properties. Henkel 3D printing resins will be implemented in the new BCN3D application center, where the VLM technology implementation program is taking place. The participants will join the well-known companies Saint Gobain and Prodrive to be the first to discover VLM and experience its full potential with real 3D printing details, accompanied by individual attention to meet their printing needs, the press release concludes.
